Free Sails Spinaker and trailers - damaged boat if wanted

Post by Annabel Peebles »

Our Otter has a cracked hull so we are waiving goodbye to her but she has a set of sails including a spinaker and her trailer + a road trailer if anybody would like to arrange to collect them from near Dover. You would be welcome to her too but she is not seaworthy ...obviously!

Definitely interested, although I'll have to check how long the trip would be. The sails I have on ours are sailing school training sails, and the trailer would be handy to bring her home from the club to work on more easily.

I also would be really interested, if Aptanet doesn't take you up!
Can I ask is she Bermudan rig (i.e. the aluminium mast type)?
Most importantly for me I am still trying to source a mast fixing for the Bermudan rig - as mine is missing! Plus my sails are a bit sad looking :)

Aptanet, if you do go and collect, I don't suppose you would mind salvaging the mast fixing from the old hull? I am at Emsworth so just down the road from you and would happily give you a few quid for the trouble...similarly I'm struggling with some very rusty bottle screws and missing d clamps that are supposed to fix the shrouds - so anything going spare from the boat would really assist in getting ours back on the water !

We are in Kingsdown 5 miles up the coast from Dover . is that within your reach ? if so we should arrange a date for collection . It would be great to re-home!

Sorry, a bit slow of the mark with a reply. I was considering sorting something out for Wednesday since I'll be part way there, but it seems as though being in Hove doesn't help much for travel time - only saves about 30 to 45 mins! My other slight issue is that I currently don't have a towbar fitted to my car - I used to tow regularly with my last car. I'm looking at sorting that out, but don't think I can do that before next Wednesday anyway unfortunately.

Brindolini, happy to pick up the mast fixing for you, and any other bits I can. I've no idea whether the mast and fixings are available - I'm after some new shrouds myself as I've got one that is fraying. If you have somewhere to put the hull I can bring that and you can strip any bits you want - although you've then got to work out what to do with it!

Annabel, are there better times for collection? Weekday or weekend, or etc.? I suspect I'll end up making it a family day out - and take any stick for the ulterior motive - but I can do that weekdays as well as weekends. PM me if you prefer.

Don't think I've got room for the hull unfortunately, (and would likely land me in trouble with Mrs B) but Aptanet if you did manage to get the mast fixing that'd be great - no worries if it turns out to be too tricky, I think someone has managed to find a reasonable replacement one which isn't to many ££s on a different thread. Off on hols for a couple of weeks, hope all goes well with the trip to Dover, and good to know that the sails will go to a good home and get some more time on the water. Enjoy the sun!

Sorry Annabel, I've been flat out with work. I've not sorted out a towbar yet, the lead time is longer than I expected. I've been meaning to do it for a while now, but have a friend with a towbar who generally tows Bertie home on the club trailer for the cost of a pint which has probably made me lazy! I've got an event next weekend, which is a bit of a pain - well, in terms of being able to travel, I'll enjoy the event :)

Hi Annabel, Paul and Brindolini

I'm trying to source an aluminium mast for my Otter (1135) to replace a damaged wooden rig.

If Annabel’s is available, in reasonable condition and not needed by others, I would be very interested. I can provide my own shrouds and am happy to worry about the mast step at a later date if need be – I’m planning to work on the hull over the winter so stepping the new mast is a good few months away.

I’m in Exeter so Dover is not exactly on my doorstep, but I do have a tow bar and could drop items off in Waterlooville and/or Emsworth on my way back. I could potentially make the trip this Saturday (12th) or Sunday (13th) if that would suit.

Kind regards.

Huw

That's quite a trip, but if you're willing and able to do it that works for me. I am now unable to make it on the 12th so it would save delaying things for Annabel. I've sent a direct email to check whether this works.

Hello,
Is the damaged otter still available, only i'm on the hunt for a spinnaker, rowlocks and transom board to enable an outboard to be fitted?. A road trailer and a cover are also on the list.
Many thanks,

I keep meaning to thank Annabel and Huw, so it I'll do it here and reply to your post at the same time Chris.

I have the Otter on my drive, and before I saw her was planning to find a way to dispose of the hull. Having seen it though, bar the damage she is in better condition than mine, so I now have a project to see if I can repair her. Once that is done I can decide what to do with my original one, with two sons there's the chance I'll end up with two to look after - although that would require sorting out a new mast, centreboard and rudder as those will be being used!

That said, I don't think it would have helped given your list of bits you are after. The only one on the list was the trailer, and that was my original interest - along with some proper sails (rather than the training ones I have, which are from her time at a sailing school).
