reefing and solo launching

Post by christobay »

Hello Otter sailors,
I'm new to dinghy sailing and after reading such good reports I have just purchased a nice Otter, Bermudan rig, sail no 631 and will be sailing it in Poole harbour.
I wondered if anyone could give me information on reefing the mainsail and also where to put the blocks to lead the mainsheet to a foreward position and how to attach them.
Also, I would be greatfull for any tips on solo launching from a slipway / beach plus any other "Otter" tips that you care to give me.
Looking forward to your replies.
Christobay.

hello
i have an otter 573 which i bought to learn sailing and have a bit of fun.
my sail have been fitted with two lines of eyelets by my local sheet maker
to allow me to reduce sail by approx 24 inches and just above batten pocket
for second reef. i belong to a local club but they mostly race but my interest
lies more in cruising.
look up hostellers sailing club and or
dinghy cruising with phillips for more info on reefing and lots more.
we recently took our otter to norfolk 600 mile round trip for a holiday and tried
out the sail reefs, just gives me more confidence in windy conditions.
i will try to put some pics on here but if not send me a message and i will contact you.
hope this heips.
fair winds. Dave.

Dave, thanks for your reply, sorry I haven't responded before now. I like the reefing on your sail so I'm going to do the same to mine, I've just ordered an eyelet punch to make a boat cover so it shouldn't be too difficult. Do you know what year your boat was made?I was wondering how old mine was and judging by the sail numbers I would think there's about a year difference. Thanks, Chris.
