Forum updates

Post by aptanet »

Well after switching to the default phpBB theme to try using different anti spam measures on the registration pages the volume of spam seems to have gone through the roof. Even after returning to the original method, which had done reasonably well for a while, things didn't improve much. I do wonder whether the default theme is a bit of a red flag that makes it easy to spot a potential target.

So after being away for a few days and having to clear through another batch of junk, I have managed to finish off the next stage of reducing the unnecessary noise on the forums:

First off I have updated the back end software (actually the new version of phpBB has only just been released, but it makes sense to keep bang up to date).

Secondly I have installed a new method of preventing the automated scripts from joining and posting junk.

Lastly I have updated the theme. This has been in the works for a while, but after a bit of playing this evening I've sorted out the new theme with the customisations I need for the site.

So, with any luck this will keep the noise levels down and posts will be genuine posts and not the irrelevant or unpleasant stuff that I've had to keep clearing out.

Happy sailing.

I probably should have added that I still have to got through the membership list and clear out those that really shouldn't be there, mainly link spam in profiles, but that will have to wait till later now - I need some sleep!!
