Re: Otter riggin

Hello. Otters, and probably almost all other sailing dinghies do not have backstays. They are normally only found on keelboats. If you have rigging problems on your boat, post the query here and I'm sure replies will be forthcoming! Otters seem to be rigged in two styles- Bermudan rig, with one sing...

Re: otter meet

Good idea, but I'm based at Chichester and my current trailer isn't too clever. The CVRDA have meetings and Otters are welcome to join in with the various boats that attend. http://www.cvrda.org/wp-cvrda/ The Otters should be more active than they are; there's no Nationals , and this website is the ...

Re: otter sails/almost eaten

Hello. If your rig is a gunter type, then Mirror dinghy sails would be comparable. Otherwise if bermudan, you could try Gull dinghy sails, (both berm. and gunter) Heron dinghy, Eleven Plus dinghy, etc. You could look on those class association websites to see if there's anything secondhand available...

Re: Otter 530

Hello Albacore...... I've had a chance to measure my rudder on No. 199 and the blade protrudes some 46cms below the keel line of the hull. The shape is very similar to that of a Mirror dinghy. My tiller is 107cms long and the tiller extension is 84 cms. The extension is so that single handed I can s...

Re: tyre pressures

Hello.
I usually inflate my 8" road wheels to 27 ~30 psi. This makes the tyre hard enough not to distort. I certainly wouldn't try 100psi!
I use about 20psi for launching trolley wheels.
Good lick with the boat.

Re: Otter 134

I was interested to read of your capsize................ For future reference(?) I wonder how easy the boat was to right, did it turn turtle at all (or even quickly? ) and did you get back in over the side or have to cllimb in over the transom? Presumably there was a boat full of water in it when ri...

Re: Beating upwind- Mast Rake

I'd agree with Justin. Although my Otter is gunter rig, it keeps up pretty well with Enterprises etc until planing conditions. If, however you are sailing with 2 beefy adults against light crews in Toppers etc, you may struggle. I'd also suggest that you keep the crew weight forward and make sure th...

Otter Origins

I am the owner of no.199. This is a fibreglass boat with a gunter rig (like a Mirror) and a rotating mast. I also sail high performance dinghies, but am a big fan of the Otter. On the thread re 'Otter Brochure' there are questions re the age of boats. I have Yachts and Yachting Racing Classes Yearly...
