Re: Help restoring an Otter

Hello. I can't see from your photo clearly where the mast may be located. On mine, (gunter rig) the foot of the mast sits on the foredeck just before the cockpit. It is located there by a pin in a hole in the deck which also locates into a hole in the bottom if the mast. Are you sure the mast should...

Re: Question about rigging an Otter

Hello. Welcome to Otter sailing. My boat, 199 has the same rig as yours and Albacore 43. I set my mast up so that the shrouds and forestay are tight, but preferably with a bit of rake aft. I put the mast up each sail, so the shrouds are left attached by chainplates to the shroud plates. My mast rota...

Re: Mysterious Otter

Hello, Sea Spray............. I would heartily support your efforts to resurrect the building of new Otters......... You could try to contact George O'Brien Kennedy or his family to establish who has rights to the design, or / and ask on the forum of CVRDA http://www.cvrda.org/wp-cvrda/ who have som...

Re: Otter Mast needed

......your mast........ You could fit a longer mast as long as: The foot fitting on the mast will fit whatever the fitting is you have on your boat to step the mast onto, and The shrouds and forestay, (the three wires that hold the mast upright) are long enough to reach the anchor points on the boat...

Re: Otter Mast needed

You're on the ball, Albacore 43...........

You might be able to find an abandoned metal mast at a sailing club and cut it down, if you can be bothered and if you still have the old damaged one for the compatible fittings...........

Mirrors now have bermudan rigs...................

Re: Center board

.........two lengths of hosepipe, one on each side of the centreboard, screwed on so that the board is held firmly but not immovable, is usually sufficiient.................

I prefer the ribbed or more rubbery pipe.

Re: Toe strap

Toestraps on my boat are secured by two plates screwed through the webbing to the floor, one in front of the centreboard and one behind. The webbing is raised to a point below the thwart / seat so that you can get your feet under the straps easily and so that the webbing just doesn't sit flat on the...

Re: Gunter Rigging Dimensions

Last year I forgot to measure.............. but I have now: Anyone reading this, please remember that on my boat, the mast is deck stepped and rotates on a pin set on the foredeck. The boom is attached as per a Finn, it passes through the mast. Mast: Wood, 3.34m long, D shape, flat of D, (rear face)...

Re: Advice on buying an Otter

My pointers to you would be : Inspect the anchor points for shrouds, forestay and sheet fairleads, Check the mast step, especially if the mast is a rotating gunter rig. If so, check the pin which the mast rotates on, and the pin pivot point on the foredeck. Check the bottom of the mast to look for s...

Re: Otter tiller

Hello. For what it's worth, my tiller measures 42 inches from the inboard end to the rear of the rudder head, and the tiller extension is 32 inches long. The tiller is as per the earlier Mirror dinghies in that it sits over and each side of the spine of the rudder head. I have bolted the tiller thru...

Re: Otter riggin

Well, 2~3 mm of play isn't a lot, and the tension of the shrouds ought to hold the mast pretty firmly in place. I'd suggest you make sure you're confident that the mast won't work out of the shoe either with loose shrouds and forestay, or when the rig is under pressure beating, running, etc. If you ...

Re: Otter riggin

Hello. You don't say whether you have a deck or keel stepped mast, (not sure if any Otter masts are keel stepped?) and whether gunter or bermudian rig. However, I presume you are refering to the flat u shaped mast shoe that the foot of the mast sits on. If so, aren't there a series of holes along th...

Re: Gunter Rigging Dimensions

Hello Albacore 43........ As luck has it, my Otter, 199 is also gunter. I may have the opportunity of visiting it / her this weekend and if so will measure up. The masthead shroud ends are attached to an s/s collar with tangs whilst the hull ends are onto adjustable chainplates. the forestay has a l...
