Re: Question about rigging an Otter
Welcome Andy! I have a similar rig on 158 and have found the following procedure to be satisfactory. When fully rigged, adjust forestay so that mast is upright or very slightly raked back when boat is level. Shroud tension is then adjusted to allow boom a maximum swing to just before shrouds. Re: Cruising an Otter
Not wishing to pry but if you let us know your "rough" location, you may be able to liaise with an Otter owner on this forum to see an example first-hand.

Can't let the year end without a post being added for six weeks!
So here's wishing all members and guests a happy and healthy 2014 with as much enjoyable sailing as time and tide allow. (That includes you Cweed!)

Re: Rudder angle
Yes, as vertical as it was designed to be; the stock will determine that. It is designed to give directional stability as opposed to the lateral stability generated by the centreboard which you will find is directly under the centre of effort acting on the sails. Whilst on the subject of rudder func...

Re: Capsize
Torchy, you are right not ot consider transom flaps.
You have already appreciated the uselessness of self-balers if you are not underway, and you certainly will never be that with a hullful of water. Transom flaps will merely have you baling for ever and ever and ever.....

Re: Otter Mast needed
How is it going with you Cweed? I hope that are not encouraging Fiona to pay a nocturnal visit to my sailing club!! I also thought that the Mirror warranted a mention but discovered that the bermudan mast length is a mere 4.75m. Probably have to lower the gooseneck to accomodate all the sail and end...

Re: Otter Mast needed
Fiona, thinking about the required mast, I hope that I will be proven wrong but you are going to be very fortunate to acquire an original one. It might be wise, whilst you are looking, to consider buying a redundant mast from another class of boat. If you go down this road, be sure to get the stays ...

Re: Otter Mast needed
Hello Fiona and welcome! I cannot help with a mast but will relate what I did to enliven two very neglected Otters that I acquired, both of which had been left uncovered in boatparks for a number of years. The woodwork had turned to a grey colour and become very hard. I initially used a fairly coars...

Re: Just bought an Otter.
Nice one "915" but you are not really that tight are you? Cannot add much to that except that if Alant attaches a long enough piece of small diameter rope to the end of the forestay and feeds this through the stem fitting, bringing it back to where he is when about to raise the mast, he wi...

Re: Just bought an Otter.
Alant, if you are not having to travel too far to launch or return home, have you considered simply releasing the forestay, tilting the mast back and lifting slightly until you can remove it from the step, then as you lower it to a horizontal position, LEAVING THE SHROUDS AFFIXED, slide the foot for...

Re: Mainsail Foot
Well, I have what appear to be the original spars (and perhaps sails) for 158.
Main has bolt-rope at tack and foot and boom has slot to accomodate the latter.
Sorry for tardy reply!!

Re: Gunter Rigging Dimensions
Springer 5, If you are going to fit a gunter mirror rig then I can help with dimensions. I also have Otter 530 to which I fitted the same. Using a standard alloy Mirror mast, I ordered 2 No. shrouds from Jimmy Green Chandlery with the Mirror "top-loop" one end and talurit eye at the other....

Otter for sale on e-bay
I saw this boat for myself a few weeks ago when I was collecting Otter 158 and it did appear to be in very good condition.
The seller was very helpful and genuine.
Just thought it was worth mentioning in case anyone was interested.

Gunter Rigging Dimensions
I have just acquired another Otter, an early gunter-rigged no.158. It has come with all original fittings and sails (in surprisingly reasonable condition) but with one exception; the standing rigging. Whilst I can have this made-up by one of the usual suppliers, I am not in a position to let them ha...
