Re: New Otter owner - looking for a bermudan rig

Hello.. Yep, I sail around Chich.Harbour. Used to be at Thorney, now kept near HISC. The Otter is great for sociable sailing, even in F3 you don't get much spray / wet! My other boats were / are always needing a wetsuit, the Otter is pretty much sail as is. It's easy to sail one up also. It would be...

Re: New Otter owner - looking for a bermudan rig

Hello. Hope you enjoy the boat. Why do you want to convert to Bermudan? if the class were a rcer, there might be a reason, but it's a bit of an old nail of a boat. Mine's gunter and in keeping with the rest of it, varnished wood trimmings, etc.. If you do go for bermudan, and have spare sails, I cou...

Re: Rebuild possible?

Look in charity furniture shops for unloved mahogany furniture for transom and thwart.

Gunwhale strips may be available in timber yards, or as I did for a small rowing boat, use lengths of used curtain track on each side of the gunwhale and bolt through....

GRP resin will bond most problems.

Re: Outboard for an Otter

You'll need to make sure the outboard clamps don't damage the transom, which is probably hollow on your boat. Consider fitting a board each side of the transom to spread the stress, The outboard needs to be really tightly mounted to prevent it working loose, and also fit a line so if it does drop of...

Re: Tiller extension

Extension length can depend on the tiller length...... If the extension is mounted at far end ( from rudder)of tiller, if too long then when you go about etc it may get caught in the sheeting off the transom. Imagine where you'll sit when sailing in a breeze, possibly sitting on the gunwhale and the...

Re: New otter owner

Hello There are very few youtube videos on Otter sailing. You need to read up and learn the basic points of how to sail and the names of the parts of the boat and sails. Join your local sailing club (when possible) for advice. Do you know what rig for the sails you have? Gaff rig has a short mast an...

Re: Centreboard

Does your boat have the two piece stainless steel bracket that screws to the top of the centreboard case and the male and female pin join through the pivot hole together to form a pivot for the centreboard? If not, you probably have a centreboard bolt for it to pivot on. The cutout is / was probably...

Niad.........

An interesting suggestion.......

I looked on the CVRDA dinghy database, they list the Heyland Swift and the Heyland Lugger, but there are no details on either.............

Do you have other information on either of these?

Re: I may be wasting your time...

Rigging......... At the top of the mast (lower mast) should be a sheave / pulley. This takes the halyard (rope that pulls up the sail) on a bermudan rig, or the top mast on a gunter (your top mast) rig. One end of the halyard, the end toward the rear of the boat, is attached to the top mast, possibl...

Re: I may be wasting your time...

Hello. I dont think that's an Otter................. When you say secure the yard to the mast, presumably you mean the top mast to the bottom mast? Haven't you already rigged it in the photo? Forestay....... Usually your local yacht / dinghy chandlery will make one, some on the spot if you tell them...

Okay,
You may as well see what Aptanet turns up with.
