Re: Beating upwind- Mast Rake
I agree with you with the mast fully forward the boat was a bit unstable but I have brought the mast back a bit and it seems to have the desired effect i.e. I was placed in a race this weekend for the first time. However the winds were very light and it was a lot of tatics so further adjustment may ...

I have only been sailing for a couple of years in a Wayfarer. When I bought the Otter this year it was a rear main but I changed my boat to centre main after a couple of months and its just great, its so much easier to handle and it wasn't difficult to do.

Re: Beating upwind- Mast Rake
Justin I have adjusted the rake to the maximum it will go forward on the current rigging this seems to have made beating upwind a lot better. However I think I may be losing some power when reaching and wonder if I should bring it back a bit.

Justin
Thanks for your help with this, I have just replaced my sails so they are brand new and I have been flattening the sail. I will have to try the rake of the mast to see what impact that has.

Otter 640
I woud suggest that you do renew the ply wood on the inside, my boat was used with an electric outboard that was very light and didn't have a plate inside. This has caused the GRP to distort so I imagine that a heavier motor would cause significant damage.

Mainsail Footing
Otter 640 I have just bought new sails for my Otter and they have arrived with the mainsail cut with a loose footing set up instead of what I was expecting which was a rope inside the sail that feeds through the boom. The sail makers are happy to change the sail for me but I wanted to check first wh...

I have checked the mast on my Otter which is a bermudan and there is a serial number and nothing else. I'm not sure if that helps!

My sail number is 640 and I was told when I bought it that it will be 35years old this month, but I don't have anything to verify that. Steven

Re: Otter, original brochure
I have just bought an Otter that is 35yrs old and seems to have all the original bits. I would be interested in a copy of the Original Brochure for the Otter if anyone seeing this has one.

Single handed Otter
I have been looking for a smaller boat as my sons are too busy to sail my Wayfarer with me. I have been considering buying an Otter as they look quite stable but I wondered how easy they are to sail single handed for instance in the Solent? Steve
